Lake Gear Guide: Less Hauling, More Lake Time
SUN RUM OUTDOORS / BRING THE RIGHT THINGS
Less hauling.
More hanging out.
The best lake-day setup starts with your actual day: how far you carry it, how many people share it, and where it all goes when you get home.
What does your lake day look like?
A walk to the dock
Start with what you can comfortably carry back. Count stairs, hills, and the bag of wet towels—not just the easy walk down.
Start with towels and carrying →A shared afternoon
Agree on drinks, food, and shared gear first. One person owning the list can prevent everyone bringing a full setup.
Start with cooler space →A whole weekend
Ask what the house already provides, where things can dry, and what needs to fit in the car on Sunday.
Start with the free planners →01 / THE WET-TOWEL WALK
A towel has two jobs: dry you, then dry out.
Before replacing the whole stack, compare one candidate with a towel you already like. Feel matters, and a small packed size alone does not tell you how it will perform after a swim.
- Check the size: Is it comfortable to wrap around you, or mainly useful for drying off?
- Try it wet: Compare comfort and the weight you actually carry home.
- Plan the drying spot: Look at care instructions and whether there is somewhere to hang it between uses.
- Try one wash: Check the feel, stitching, and care routine before buying a set.
Try this before shopping: give each person responsibility for their own towel and choose a drying spot when you arrive.
02 / FEWER TRIPS
Choose the bag for the route home.
Lay out what you carry together: towels, dry clothes, keys, and the things you reach for most. Then compare the opening, handles, pockets, and cleanup—not just the listed capacity.
- Separate wet and dry: Give damp items their own place, and unpack them when you get home.
- Check the loaded carry: Handles should work for the person carrying it and the route they take.
- Read water-protection details: Check the exact model's closure instructions and stated limits. A splash claim is not a promise that everything inside can be submerged.
03 / SPACE THAT WORKS
Before a bigger cooler, make a smaller plan.
Decide what needs to travel for this outing and how often you can return to the house. Compare exterior dimensions, empty weight, usable space, and the room needed for ice or cooling packs.
Picture loading it into the car, getting it down the steps, and lifting it back at the end of the day. Wheels are only useful if the route suits them.

Five questions before an upgrade
- What problem does this solve on our usual lake day?
- What can we use, share, or borrow first?
- Where will it fit in the car, at the lake, and at home?
- Can we clean it, get replacement parts, and understand the warranty?
- Are delivery costs and return conditions clear before checkout?
A useful upgrade should make the day easier—not give you another thing to manage.
